Updated Tuft & Needle Bed Reviews and Ratings
The mattress industry has been changing rapidly in the past decade. We’ve seen countless startups coming into the market on an online-only basis. Furthermore, many of the older brands have moved from the traditional business model into the online world.
The thing is, any brand that’s selling beds exclusively online is going to be able to provide better value for the same price tag.
This way, brands cut the expenses of middle men, commercial rent, additional workforce, and everything else that comes with operating a retail store.
Today, these brands sell online and provide the same value as did the $3000 mattresses before them but with a much, much lower price tag.
I’d also like to mention that this company is extremely transparent with the materials they use and the manufacturing process their products go through.
This is a good thing because this means there’s no hidden catch with the brand’s products – what you see is what you get, no more, no less.
Recently, Tuft & Needle has joined in on the online craze. They’ve introduced their mattress, and they claim it’s one of the best you’ll find in this price range.
However, is it worth its price? Are there better options out there in the same range? That’s why we’re here today.
I’m going to do an objective review on this bed, based on countless hours of research and comparisons with different brands that sell in the same price range.
If you’re in a hurry – you might want to skip down to the pros and cons list where we created a rundown of its best and worst features, including things previous buyers might have complained about.
Tuft & Needle Mattress Construction
This mattress has been constructed in two layers. The first, or top layer, is a 3.0“ thick polyurethane foam layer, designed to provide most of the comfort and pressure relief support.
The second layer is a less dense 7.0“ thick layer – also polyurethane foam. This layer serves mainly as the foundational support of the entire bed.
As far as my experience goes, polyurethane foam is going to provide a considerable amount of both support and comfort. In other words, it’s pretty good considering its price tag.
Polyurethane foam is also going to provide decent airflow, so this mattress shouldn’t sleep hot either. To put it in comparison, it’s going to sleep warmer than innerspring beds, but cooler than memory foam, and pretty much the same as a latex.
Thin Cover Provides God Airflow
The cover on the Tuft & Needle is best described as basic. It’s white, of no particular design and is especially thin. If you don’t care much for the color or lack of design patterns – you’re going to be just fine with this cover.
Since it’s quite thin, this cover is going to provide an environment with more airflow. This means it’ll sleep cooler which is always a great benefit to have.
Universal Firmness & Feel
It’s obvious Tuft & Needle tries to please as many people as it’s possible with this mattress. Their previous product was much firmer, meaning it was best for back or stomach sleepers.
This bed, on the other hand, is a softer version. It’s dubbed medium-firm, and this means it’s going to be a good fit for stomach, back, and side sleepers.
Great Warranty & Trial Period Policies
T&N didn’t go overboard with its warranty policy, but it’s still steady at ten years. This is the industry standard and something most brands will have in this price range.
They’ve applied the same logic for the trial period. It’s a 100-day trial policy within which you can opt-in for a return and receive a full refund.
Both of these policies are quite good, and since the company has a lot of experience in customer care services, there shouldn’t be any hassles with the returns and warranty issues.
These facts make this bed a risk-free purchase. You buy it, and you’ve got three months to decide whether or not you want to keep it, or get your money back and get something else.
Price over Value Comparison
I wanted to take this opportunity to compare this mattress to other brands’ beds within the same price range. While it does come close to the top, it’s true there are better options out there for the same buck.
That said, those other options might have some attributes that you personally do not like. For example, you might be a fan of polyurethane foam over latex or memory foam beds.
This basically tells us that it falls to personal preferences. If you truly are a fan of polyurethane foam – if you’ve had previous, positive experience with this material – then your best bet is probably this mattress.
I say this because there aren’t many polyurethane foam beds that bring these kinds of features to the table – in this price range.
If, however, the price tag is not a deciding factor for you, then you can find much better options out there, but those will also put a much bigger dent in your wallet.
Good Motion Isolation
Note that I said it’s good – not excellent. That’s true. Memory foam is the king of motion isolation, and polyurethane can only come in second – right next to latex.
Still, if you’re a couple, you’re going to want this mattress before any innerspring option. Good motion isolation is essential for couples because if you or your partner tend to turn and toss a lot during sleep – the other side party isn’t going to be disturbed.
However, if you want perfect, unquestionable motion isolation – you should consider memory foam. I always love to describe this by mentioning how dense memory foam beds let you do jumping jacks on one side of the bed while your partner doesn’t feel anything on the other.
What We Liked:
Doesn’t Sleep Hot – The combination of polyurethane foam and the thin cover on this mattress should provide a comfortable sleep without getting too hot. Plus, you can also get a cooling pad on top if it does get a bit too hot for your liking.
Good Value – Compared to other polyurethane beds in this price range, this one comes in at the top. Compared to memory foam and latex mattress, it comes in somewhere in the middle. If you want polyurethane foam – it’s an excellent buy.
Good Warranty & Trial Period – The 10-year warranty period and a 100-day trial period make this product a safe but, a risk-free purchase. You can opt-in for a return and a full refund anytime within the trial period.
Works With Couples – Being a polyurethane mattress, it’s going to have at least decent motion isolation – a feature which is a must for most couples.
Available In All Popular Sizes – including Twin, Queen and King.
What We Didn’t Like:
Initially Bad For Side-Sleepers – Once you fit this mattress into your bed foundation, it’s going to take some time until it comes down from its factory firmness. If you’re a side-sleeper, you’re going to have to be patient until it does to enable yourself a comfortable sleep.
Tuft & Needle is a company with a lot of experience in both manufacturing beds but in customer care services as well.
In other words, the company should know what they’re doing by now, have listened to years of customer feedback, and have probably dealt with a few returns now and then.
My point here is that if you buy from TuftandNeedle.com – you’ll be working with a professional, experienced people. People who should know how to deal with any hassles or issues swiftly and efficiently.
Concerning the mattress itself, I’d recommend it if you cannot spend more and if you’re OK with polyurethane foam. The material is going to provide comfort and support, and there’s no question about it. Personally, the number one concern for me would be possible heat retention issues.
Things might work differently for you, but I absolutely hate sleeping hot. I cannot stand it, and that’s why I’d want to be 100% sure it won’t be a problem with any bed I plan on buying.
That said, you should keep in mind that Tufts and Needles provide excellent trial periods, which can become extremely important in this situation.
Don’t over-think the situation. If you like this bed, there’s no harm in trying it out for a few months. You can always return it and receive a full refund.
If you do decide to get it, remember that it’s going to be particularly firm once you first sleep on it, making it a frustration if you’re a side-sleeper.
However, it will get softer and become a good mattress for side-sleepers after some time – especially if you use it constantly.
Taking only its price range into account, this bed comes out on top, especially if we look at polyurethane mattresses only. If you’re considering only poly foam – this is pretty much your best bet.
