Our Reviews Of Saatva Luxury Firm And Plush Mattresses 2017
Have you been looking for a premium quality mattress? Dare we say – a luxury option, but still at a reasonable price range? Well, this is exactly a gap that Saatva seems to be determined to fill in the current mattress market. Read further for our independent Saatva mattress review and rating.
They’re doing this with an eco-friendly, responsible manufacturing process, high-quality products, exceptional customer service, and sought-after features such as extremely reasonable warranties, trial periods and prompt delivery services.
Saatva has shown responsibility through their beds with a strong environmentally friendly initiative. Saatva uses bio-based foams, recycled steel, organic cotton. Their mattresses are anti-allergenic, carry two coil units, and provide excellent air flow.
To put it in their own words, with all mentioned features, Saatva works to provide “a very fresh, healthy sleep“. Furthermore, Saatva.com prides itself on being a solely eCommerce business (including their Loom & Leaf and Zenhaven sub-brands).
This business model has allowed them to eliminate all the costs that traditional mattress stores have, such as commercial rent, insurance, maintenance and excessive commission, and redirect all of these resources towards creating a luxury mattress, at a lowest possible cost.
However, not being able to inspect a bed before buying it might be a serious downside for some buyers.
We felt these facts about Saatva should be well known and can influence a buying decision. However, it’s time to take a look inside the actual construction process of a Saatva bed.
Going Beyond Traditional Construction
So far, we’ve gotten so used to memory foam mattresses like Casper and their construction process that we thought this one will be no different. However, Saatva doesn’t follow the industry standard here and might actually be doing a better job.
Saatva beds, unlike so many other foam-based mattresses, are being constructed with a different construction technique in mind, something called a “coil-on-coil construction“.
In fact, Saatva’s luxury mattresses are manufactured with a tempered steel support lower base coil. This translates to a long-lasting bed that’s going to showcase added durability meaning it will both last longer in your bedroom and also prevents sagging.
Within the top layer, Saatva uses the most advanced EVERFLEX coil method in the luxury mattress industry, which results in a bed that’s going to contour to your specific sleep posture and body shape.
For its bottom support layer, Saatva uses 13 gauge coils, which are actually the thickest steel coils you could find in the industry. This is way beyond normal thickness that is traditionally used and shows how dedicated Saatva is to creating a truly high-quality product. It might also be worth mentioning that Saatva uses Legget and Platt, an American company to manufacture their coils.
Anatomy of the Saatva Luxury Mattress
Now that we’ve covered the construction process, let’s review the actual product.
Let’s start with the bottom layers. The edge layer (support layer) within this bed is a single foam layer that serves to wrap around the coil layers. Its job is to protect the coils, while additionally providing that luxurious feel of a high-quality product.
Furthermore, this layer allows for more comfortable sitting and sleeping alongside the edges. The sides of the bottom layer are 5“ thick, and the head/foot areas are covered with a 2“ thick polyester foam.
The second layer from the bottom is made of high profile steel coils. This is the support base, and it’s comprised of up to 416 individual coils in a Queen-sized mattress. Remember, the steel used here is recycled steel and it provides and excellent foundation layer, resulting in exceptional support that this bed has to offer.
The third layer or the comfort/support layer is made out of 884 individual coils, and every single one of these caters to your body shape and size, and your sleep position. This is an absolutely great addition to the anatomy of this bed because this means you’ll feel the same level of comfort no matter which sleep position you use, be it on the side, your back or your stomach.
The lumbar support layer is a 1“ thick memory foam layer found in between the top layer and the cover, and provides just enough lumbar support, while not being too thick to cause heat retention or similar issues.
And finally, the top layer, which is a pillow-top, is praised for being highly soft and breathable and is also made out of organic cotton. If you’re a fan of a pillow top mattress, this is going to provide that much-needed feel of softness and comfort.
Excellent Choices for Firmness & Support
Being innovative as they are, Saatva offers three different firmness options to its buyers. You can choose to go for a Saatva plush soft, Saatva luxury firm, and the basic Saatva firm.
The Saatva plush soft option pretty much speaks for itself. It’s plush, and it’s soft. This will be a good choice if you’re looking to ”be embraced” or ”hugged” by your bed, allowing yourself to sink in and have a steady night’s sleep.
The Saatva Luxury Firm option is often looked at as the sweet spot between its plush and firm mattresses. This is often a good choice for sleepers who are not sure what they want and have no specific opinion in this regard. To give you a hint, luxury firm mattresses are what are often used in nice hotels.
And finally, the Saatva Firm mattresses. This option is best for stomach and back sleepers, where you won’t sink in – at all, while it still provides that feeling of comfort as any bed should. It might be a good choice if you’re suffering from back pain.
Praised features: Warranty and Trial Period
Going through their warranty agreement, we found some exciting news. Read on to learn more what happens if your mattress is found defective.
If you find your Saavta mattress defective as a result of faulty structural issues, it will be replaced with a new bed at no cost, provided the error was discovered in the first two years of ownership.
However, if the flaw is discovered between 3 – 15 years, Saatva will not give you a brand new mattress but will repair your current one – at no cost.
Additionally, they offer you the possibility to pay 25% of the bed cost and have a brand new one delivered to your doorstep.
Saatva Trial Period
This is where Saatva really exceeded the industry standard and where they show confidence in their products. SaatvaMattress.com store offers a 120-night home trial. If at any time during these 4 months you find yourself unsatisfied with the bed, you may opt to return it for a full refund, minus the delivery fee.
What we Liked
- Innovative construction process – Saatva uses some of the most advanced, most expensive construction techniques for its beds, such as the coil-on-coil system. Furthermore, these mattresses are made in the USA (delivery to Canada is also available), with the steel used being recycled steel which also comes from an American company.
- Excellent quality at an affordable price – one of the few mattress companies that provide exceptional value at a reasonable cost, which certainly places it at the top of our Best-Buy list.
- Firmness options – Saatva matresses are available in three firmness options; plush, luxury firm (medium), and firm – allowing everyone to find what suits them best.
- Trial Period – They also offer the most friendly trial period throughout the entire luxury mattress industry, with the trial period itself lasting for 4 months, within which you can ask for a return and receive a full refund.
What we Didn't Like
- Quite heavy – with all that high-quality steel coils and extra comfort layers, this bed is quite heavy, and according to previous buyer reviews, has proven to be a hassle to get into small spaces.
Is Saatva a Good Choice for You?
If you’ve been looking for a luxury mattress, at a reasonable cost, then this will likely be at the top of your list. Being a luxury mattress, Saatva features three different firmness options, Plush, Luxury Firm and Firm.
The construction is based on high-quality recycled steel, features a Euro-style pillow top, and an excellent bounce as well. Additionally, Saatva is certainly a unique company since they operate online while still providing luxury options.
Your sleeping position or body posture shouldn’t be an issue since they offer different thickness options and the individually wrapped coils should contour to every body shape.
This bed is a great option if you’ve been looking for a ”hotel mattress”, a luxury option which will provide comfort, support, where heat retention is not an issue, and still manages to keep a reasonable price tag.
I’d also like to add that these do not have a problem of carrying that ”new mattress smell” with them since the bio-foam used here is aired out after the manufacturing process. To summarize, we really couldn’t think of any definitive downside to this mattress, which might actually be the first of its kind.
