We Reviewed 6 Mattress Toppers For Back Pain Sufferers
Owning a good mattress topper will not only help relieve any type of back pain you might have, but it will also help you sleep more comfortably. Most people don’t buy mattress pads until their back pain gets so severe that it interferes with their lives.
This can be a mistake. We’d recommend a good back pain mattress topper to anyone who even slightly feels back pain – especially if the pain is located in your lower back. The point is that whether you get one before or after back pain shows – you’re doing a good thing either way.
On the other hand, the market today is filled with copies of the good brands, pads made with extremely cheap and sometimes even dangerous materials.
These brands only sell toppers to make a profit, and not to make a positive difference in your life. Some people praise the day they bought a mattress topper and then some people hate that day.
You shouldn’t let these kinds of opinions discourage you from getting a mattress pad. This mostly happens due to people not needing one in the first place or because all they thought about was the price tag, and got the cheapest, outsourced, imported pad they could find – and were, of course, disappointed with its quality.
You should first understand that a topper is not a mattress, it’s a mere – usually very thin – addition to your existing mattress. In any case, keep reading to learn how to choose the mattress pad that’s going to meet your specific needs and help in relieving back pain.
How To Choose Back Pain Mattress Pad
Here’s a list of things you should keep in mind when picking out a mattress pad for your bed. Consider these carefully and then proceed to check out the toppers we recommend.
Consider the Size
Not all mattress toppers are the same size. Some vary greatly. Even if you purchase a high quality, expensive pad, you’re still going to have a bad time if it’s not suitable for your mattress. The point is – take precise measurements and memorize the dimensions you need before you go online to see what topper you’d want to order. We’re going to recommend a dozen mattress pads at the end of this article.
Make sure you know what dimensions you need before you decide you want any on those. There’s one other option. What do you do if only you or your partner needs or wants a mattress pad? Should the other party just accept it and be forced to sleep on one even if they don’t need it? Well, in most cases no one would mind the extra comfort and support you receive from a topper, but there are still people who don’t want one. If this is your situation, you should know that it’s perfectly normal to get a pad that’s going to fit only your side of the bed.
This way, you’ll get the pain relief you need while your partner doesn’t have to go through any changes. Also, you can always easily remove the topper for a night in which you want to sleep close to your partner. You can also use it during the day to rest on it, and gain the benefits at that time. The point is there’s many options with which you can customize your experience.
Do You Hate Sleeping Hot?
It’s no secret that memory foam mattresses tend to sleep a lot hotter than latex or innerspring mattress. This can become a real issue with a mattress pad because while you will get rid of back pain, you’ll also sweat throughout the night – at least in the summer.
If you’re like me and hate sleeping hot, you’ll want to run away from any mattress topper the moment you read this. Luckily, this will not be the case if you know what you’re buying. We’ve already seen memory foam mattresses that are infused will a cooling agent or gel, and we’ve seen an enormous increase in these kinds of features in beds in the last decade – because they do work.
But what about the mattress pad? If that’s what’s going to cause heat retention issues, what do I care about the mattress beneath? Well, this is why we’re only going to showcase toppers with cooling abilities at the end of this article.
However, even if you still find yourself sleeping a bit too hot for your liking, you can always get a cooling pad. There are cooling pads out there that are sold specifically for mattress toppers, but my honest opinion is that this would now become too much of a hassle, not to mention needless spending. It’s much better just to get high-quality mattress pad that’s going to have cooling properties.
Don’t Get a Soft Mattress Pad for Back Pain
This is an honest suggestion. I’ve had personal experience here because I had bought many mattress pads in the past, without doing any research and reading one of these kinds of articles. My experience is that your back pain might get worse if you get an extremely soft mattress topper.
Many people make this mistake simply because of the appealing comfort that comes from all that softness. I say let’s keep things balanced. What we need is a comfortable topper that’s still going to be at least medium-firm, so that we can get the support for our back that we so dearly need.
Getting a firm mattress pad will ensure your back gets the proper support, and this way, your back pain will be resolved more quickly and easily. The point is that while comfort is important, we’re looking to resolve a health issue here, and so, the pleasure of comfort should be secondary. You want a firm, quality topper with cooling properties, and you’re all set.
Take Note of the Warranty and Trial Period Policies
Not the most important thing, but still worth knowing about. Just like it is the case with mattresses, many of these brands provide trial periods for mattress pads. This becomes important because you’re looking to resolve a health issue, and you don’t want to get yourself in a situation where you must go through spending thousands only to find a suitable topper.
With a good trial policy, the brand is giving you the opportunity to try out multiple products by just paying for a single topper. Let’s say you choose a pad from the list at the end of this article, you buy it, and you start sleeping on it. If by any chance you realize it isn’t helping you, you can simply return it and receive a full refund, or exchange it for a different topper.
This simple policy makes this a risk-free shopping experience, which is incredibly useful, and hassle-free. Check out the individual reviews below to find the warranty and trial policy information for each mattress pad.
Individual Product Review
Here’s a rundown of mattress toppers we sincerely recommend, out of the dozens we’ve researched. This is the top list we’ve come up with, and it’s still versatile enough that everyone should be able to find what they’re looking for. It’s possible, of course, that none of these will fit your needs, but one thing is sure – every one of these pads provide excellent value as opposed to their cost.
Advanced Sleep Solutions
So yes, this is a memory foam pad, but keep in mind that it’s gel-infused. I previously mentioned how the number of brands who infuse their bedding products with cooling agents had increased dramatically in the past decade. This is because no one wants to sleep hot – back pain or not. Well, you don’t have to worry about heat retention here because not only is this topper gel-infused, the memory foam is also made on an open-cell basis.
If you know anything about memory foam, you know that open-cell foam is usually an attribute of plant-based, eco-friendly foam materials.
Anyways, you’d probably be inclined to know that since it is open-cell based, it’s going to provide much better airflow, and therefore a much cooler sleep experience.
This particular mattress pad is 2“ thick, and is manufactured in the US. The 2“ should be just enough to provide exceptional pressure relief, heat dissipation, and comfort. According to customer feedback on sale pages, this topper is most praised for relieving pain in people’s joints and shoulders. Over 90% of the reviews are positive, and those who have experience say they’ve previously had 4“ thick pads, and that a 2“ is much more enjoyable and more easily maintained.
To be perfectly objective, I’d like to mention that there are a few negative reviews. These mostly relate to the foam density in the topper, saying that it would be much better if it were denser. While there’s nothing inaccurate there, I personally still think that this pad is worth buying. With everything it provides, and if it actually helps relieve your pain, it’s basically a steal. Advanced Sleep Solutions comes with a 3-year warranty policy and a 60-day trial period. The company welcomes you to ask for a full refund if you’re displeased with the product within the 60-day period.
Other features are quite similar, so we’ll focus on these two main differences here so you can know which one would better suit your needs. Latex is generally firmer than foam, and because it’s still not extra firm, it should help your back pain more efficiently than a foam pad.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s also a considerable difference in the price tag between these two.
Like we said earlier, every one of these toppers provide more value than they’re priced at, meaning that you won’t be wrong with buying any of those, but following this logic – the more you can invest here, the better off you will be. According to previous buyers’ feedback, Ultimate Dreams will not flatten or sag, even after months of constant use.
Now, when you read about this topper – you’re likely to disregard the last two I just reviewed and order this one right away. I urge you to remain patient and read the rest of the review which includes a few more pads below.
ViscoSoft is a US company and is manufacturing these toppers in the US. This particular pad is 3“ thick as well – but it’s memory foam. It is also gel-infused meaning that heat issues should be non-existent.
Something new we see here, that the previous pads lack is the removable cover that ViscoSoft has included with this product. You receive a removable, ultra soft cover with this pad which means you get a better feel and you also get to keep your topper clean with ease. If you stain it, you can simply pull off the the cover and throw it in the washing machine. If you haven’t, take a look at the price tag of this ViscoSoft product.
You’ll probably be surprised. It’s obviously a much, much better buy compared to the previous, more expensive pad – provided you’re fine with either latex or memory foam. ViscoSoft provides a 3-year warranty with this topper and a 60-day trial period. They guarantee a full, no-questions asked refund if you decide to return the pad within the 60-day period.
This is great because you’ll be able to maintain the hygiene easily. To keep it clean and fresh, all you have to do is remove the cover and throw it in the washing machine. I always respect this feature because cleaning a topper without a removable cover can be a real hassle.
There should be more than enough airflow with this topper. Since the cover is eco-friendly (bamboo-based) – there shouldn’t be any odor or off-gassing happening with this mattress pad.
Most customer feedback we’ve looked at have been positive. However, there’s always a few negative reviews, and with Milliard, they say that even though it’s gel-infused, it still tends to sleep hot sometimes, especially in Summer time. I don’t see this as a problem, or at least I didn’t when I looked at its price tag.
If I had to choose right now – I would go with this mattress topper. There’s no question about it. Everything’s right on spot with this one – including its price tag.
Sleep Innovations wanted to go big league with this product, and they actually added another 2“ of an extremely comfortable fiberfill material, with a quilted cover. The company actually warns the buyers that sleeping on this mattress pad might result in never hearing your alarm in the morning because you’re going to sleep so well. While there’s no chance I’d sleep past my 4, 5-minute apart alarms, I still think Sleep Innovations is best of the bunch here. If you prefer latex, however, you obviously won’t share my opinion. Most buyer reviews are overwhelmingly positive.
The only negative reviews I could find mostly relate to possible durability issues. However, this would be of no concern to me because the company slapped a whopping 10-year warranty on this mattress pad. This kind of warranty policy shows the company’s confidence in their products, especially when you consider this as a mere mattress topper, and there are actual full-sized mattresses out there with 5-year warranty policies. You should also know that Sleep Innovations also features a removable cover, making it extremely easy to pull off and throw in the washing machine.
ExceptionalSheets Extra Plush
The company also claims that each topper is made with Revoloft. Revoloft is a luxury-type fiber-fill that’s going to provide more comfort than any standard memory foam or latex pad. Since this topper puts so much thought in comfort, this means that it’ll be a good addition to any type of mattress, whether you’ve got innerspring, latex or memory foam below – this product should function well on each of those.
However, there’s one thing I’m actually concerned about this pad. There seems to be an influx of bad reviews lately for this product because of buyer’s washing experience. Don’t get me wrong.
This product’s sales pages are filled with positive reviews, but there’s still a considerable amount of people who claim the topper ripped apart after machine-washing it. This is something to keep in mind if you decide to get it and wash it. Make sure you give the manufacturers washing instruction a good read before you throw it in the washing machine.
To summarize, I’ll remind you of a few things you ought to know. Remember, owning a good mattress topper can do wonders for your back pain, and also increase overall comfort of your sleeping experience. However, pay close attention to what you’re buying.
Considering this particular review, and the mattress pads we’ve chosen are well worth for their price tag. Keep in mind that you need to think about the size, measure your mattress perfectly and see what would be a good fit. Also, consider the construction. For example, don’t get a latex topper because I or someone else said it’s best for pain relief.
If you dislike latex in general, you’re not going to have a good experience with the topper either. Same goes for memory foam pads. Basically, you should take everything said here today with a grain of salt, and base your decision on your personal preferences and experience.
To finish off, I’d like to take this opportunity and mention the Sleep Innovations 4-Inch Dual Layer Mattress Topper. I sincerely believe it’s the best of the bunch here. It simply provides exceptional value over its price. It’s a 4“ dual-layer mattress pad, which allows it to care for both comfort and support of the sleeper perfectly. You should have no issues with back pain after some time spent on this mattress topper.
